If you ask automotive workshop owners, operations managers or fleet managers what their biggest challenge is, the answer is easy - Hiring people and retaining them. Like many industries in Australia, the automotive industry is facing a skills shortage, which is echoed by the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) and Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA). This ongoing issue can have critical repercussions on the automotive industry, impacting productivity, safety, upskilling the existing workforce or migration of skilled workers.

So, what can we do to tackle this pressing problem?

The Challenge of Attracting New Talent

To bridge the existing skills gap, we need to market the industry as an appealing career choice for a new generation.

Investing in Our Existing Workforce

Attracting new talent is crucial, but we must empower the existing workforce with new training and continuous development.

The Critical Role of Quality Equipment

The effectiveness of any workshop in attracting and retaining talent is also tied to the quality of its equipment. Modern workshops require reliable, safe, and versatile equipment, including heavy vehicle hoists to handle various vehicles, from trucks to buses and road trains.

This is the reason why leading hoist brands like Endurequip and Finkbeiner are essential to any workshop.

By investing in high-quality hoists, workshops can enhance productivity and safety for their current team and attract new mechanics.

Securing Our Future

The skills shortage in the Australian automotive industry is a multi-faceted challenge. By proactively promoting the heavy vehicle industry, investing in comprehensive training for new and existing technicians (especially in emerging technologies like EVs), and equipping workshops with the best equipment, we can attract the next generation of talented individuals. This collective effort will not only keep our essential heavy vehicles operating smoothly but also secure a bright future for the Australian automotive sector.

Australia's heavy vehicle market is constantly changing. In recent years, electric and hybrid trucks have gradually replaced conventional diesel-powered trucks. With electric and hybrid vehicles, Australian safety regulations that applied to diesel-powered vehicles may no longer apply. Because of this, adherence to Australian safety regulations must keep pace with technological advancements, and automotive workshops must come up with creative ways to satisfy the needs of the sector.

One of the most crucial pieces of equipment in a workshop that can provide both flexibility and safety for servicing both conventional and electric vehicles is a mobile truck hoist. As Endurequip and Finkbeiner's mobile heavy vehicle hoist manufacturers and distributors, we emphasise their dedication to Australian compliance standards and their essential role in maintaining workshop safety.

RUD Heavy Vehicle Hoists met with Ross Martyr, owner of Toowoomba Heavy Diesel, in April 2025. Established 19 years ago, Toowoomba Heavy Diesel operates from a purpose-built, spacious workshop on Spalding Street, Harristown, servicing trucks, earthmoving equipment, and heavy equipment.

Brett Beveridge, National Product Manager - RUD Heavy Vehicle Hoists, first contacted Ross when he expressed a need to install heavy vehicle hoists in his workshop. Ross was servicing trucks and heavy vehicles using a pit, but was considering upgrading to hoists.

"After 19 years in vehicle dealerships, I recognised the demand for trustworthy mechanics and efficient service," Ross explained. "Customers need minimal downtime to avoid business losses, which is why I started my own workshop."

Toowoomba has a significant truck industry and is a transportation hub with many heavy freight and agricultural companies servicing the Darling Downs region. Ross understood the need to have a spacious workshop with separate entry and exit doors, which meant less time to manoeuvre trucks that came in for repairs with the finished ones.

"My goal was quick turnaround for customers. This required me to think beyond a pit into innovative solutions," Ross stated. "The pit limited our capacity, forcing us to reject jobs. We needed alternative lifting options."

Consequently, Ross researched heavy vehicle hoists, prioritising wireless, battery-powered systems. This led him to the German-made Finkbeiner hoists. "It was a local acquaintance who recommended Finkbeiner. Their hydraulic wireless design, coupled with Brisbane-based service support, convinced me. After several lengthy discussions with Brett, I purchased a set of four Finkbeiner hoists"

Ross now utilises the Finkbeiner hoists alongside his existing pit, significantly increasing workshop capacity. This allows his team to work safely and efficiently on multiple jobs.

"The Finkbeiner hoists are a game changer," Ross remarked. "We no longer turn away work and can manage workflow effectively. Their ease of charging and simple operation optimises productivity. The built-in safety features ensure my team is safe when working under the vehicles."

"I recommend Finkbeiner to anyone seeking quality wireless heavy vehicle hoists. Their mobility frees up workshop space and boosts productivity. The adjustable wheel adaptors accommodate various wheel sizes and wheelbases, which adds to their versatility in servicing different-sized vehicles."
